Creative, cluttered, Aquarius/Rat. Main job: mother! all the rest just trails along behind. Moribund but not yet dead business, Wild Mustard. I want to be a science fiction writer when I grow up. For now I work full time in cancer research, part time in a bead store, and read scientific manuscripts and grants for fun & profit. My child is in elementary school and we have two cats. I'm in love with a fine Yorkshire lad and I really want to visit Iceland :-)

I am stunned by this. I guess I am still so stupid and naive that I am taken by surprise when morons and money win. As for the way they treated Dr Bolton and the staff who worked there...all I can hope is that it comes back to bite them a hundredfold. A thousandfold. Idiots, bastards, unfeeling pigs.

From the page: "So here I'm presenting my very own recipe for Salted Butter Caramel Ice Cream which I guarantee is better than anything you can get anywhere, including...gasp...the glace Caramel at the venerable Berthillon: It's so good, I can unconditionally make that claim. So there. And after the feedback I got from local friends who took a taste, they wholeheartedly agreed. Still not convinced? Then be prepared to miss out."
Well, now I've got to go eat the ice cream in the freezer. It's vanilla (my fave, hands down, and the best way to judge how good an ice cream manufacturer is, IMHO), not this amazingly mouth-watering sounding creation, but I think it will go down just fine...

Now I'm trying to remember which words I dislike ... I know there are some, but I'm still so caught up in trying to decide whether 'moist panties' bothers me or not.

Richard Lenski is my new hero. I love this man. What a pity his erudite and detailed explanation is wasted on a fool.

From the page: "Perhaps if we'd taken, on that summer day, not the tissue of words from our brave new world, but the tempered steel of the old vows and stood by them we'd all have learned that it isn't the Wedding party and the Wedding night that needs to endure in our hearts, but the things that stand at the center of the old vows. We all know them. They are the words that allow no misunderstanding when said from heart's truth: love, honor, comfort, fidelity. We all know too the promises that come later: to have, to hold, for better, for worse, richer or poorer, fairer or fouler, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, unto death and beyond, under God's holy ordinance."
Second time around, yes, and under trees and among stones, but I do believe that we will still make the old and hard promises to one another. There is no-one else I would rather make those kinds of promises to than him.

From the page: ""Our preliminary results indicate that health care providers should do a more thorough assessment of the needs of individual obese patients based on a sympathetic and nonjudgmental appreciation of their problems," Komesaroff said. "Responses may include the setting of reasonable targets with respect to disease risk factors and a closer attention to social and psychological issues.""
For this to happen, medical schools would actually have to teach their students about how to engage with patients, and also about nutrition. Neither of these things are being done at the moment.

From the page: ""In new buildings and transport systems it's now unthinkable not to design with disability in mind," he says. But fashion sees itself differently."
Indeed it does. Shallow, manipulative, and all about the money. Not that THAT is news.
On the one hand, I think this is a good idea, because it forces people to look at something that is usually ignored. On the other hand, it's still telling people that women can only look a certain way; these women's disabilities will be incorporated into that look.
As I've mentioned before, I am trying hard to help my son learn that beauty comprises so much more than mere surface symmetry and ability to go without food. I'd like to see more men and women of various sizes, shapes, ages, abilities, and colors presented to the world as 'beautiful.' However, as an American, I an acutely aware that money has the first, last and all words in between, so I'd not holding my breath.

This makes me feel much better about my attempts to teach 3-5 graders about getting to know their Bibles this summer. I'm probably not typical for my age or certainly the region in which I live, by accident (The South), because I've already told my students that, while I and others are here to guide them and try to answer their questions, that their personal relationships with God, and how they work that out, is up to them. I refuse to be part of the massive, heavy indoctrination of the young that I see going on in almost every single church in this city. I would like to be part of something that helps the children in my church (Presbyterian) understand and develop their own understanding of and relationship with God. It is intensely personal and should be treated with respect.
